Ruperto Belarmino y Virtucio

Brief Military Biography

Legioner-Ruperto Virtucio Belarmino

My name is Ruperto Virtucio Belarmino, one of the twelve children of parents Nicolas & Macaria Belarmino, both now deceased of Badian, Cebu. At twenty years old I have been drafted in the year 1939 for six months military training as required by law assigned to the Ordnance Cadre at formerly Camp Murphy now Fort Aguinaldo. After six months of military training I graduated with the rankof corporal in the reserve force of the Ordnance Service Philippine Army.
On the 26th of June 1939 I enlisted in the regular force Philippine Army, Ordnance Service Detachment, General Depot, Station at Mulle de la Industria, Manila under Major Hugo Cunanan as our Commanding Officer.
At the outbreak of World War II our detachment was inducted into the USAFFE December 8, 1941 under Captain Francis Juan, stationed at Arayat,Pampanga. On the 18th of December, I was promoted to Technical Sergeant Ordnance Service PA. As an Ordnance man and specifically instrument repairman I was assigned in the repair and maintenance of fire control instruments like panoramic sites, range finders, binoculars and also small arms, behind the front lines at Arayat,Pampanga; Tiaong, Quezon; Canlubang; Laguna and Camiling, Tarlac.
On January 1st 1942 at the foot Sta.Maria,Bulacan bridge with Captain Francis Juan and other companions on the way to the north, we met an advance Japanese forces and open fire at us with machine gun and rifle. On that encounter Capt. Francis Juan was hit and died instantly. I was also hit by a bullet on the right shoulder passing on the right lung and thru the back. I was unconsciuos for almost 48 hours and was surprised to know that I was in Sta. Maria Central School which was for the meantime converted into a hospital.
On July 1st 1942 to 30th Sept 1942 I was recuperating from gunshot wound in the care of a couple Domingo & Mercedez Perez of Poblacion, Sta.Maria, Bulacan. On October 1st 1942 to 21st Sept 1944 I joined a guerilla organization and assigned to the 51st Inf. Elga at "A" Co. 7th Bn under Capt. Gregorio Victorino. As a guerilla I was in-charge in the repair, preservation and maintenance of small arms as will as detection of Japanese garrison for information to my guerilla unit. On the 22nd Sept. 1944 to 23rd July 1945 I transfer to the Batute Regt BMA, Andersons Guerilla under Capt. Ireneo Hermogenes. On the 24th of July 1945 I reported for processing at Camp Murphy now Fort Aguinaldo and I was assigned to the 4th rep1n Bn PA and then later on tranferred to the 1st PA General Hospital, Camp Murphy 75 wherein I was honorably discharge as CDD January 31st, 1946
